Rookie Marketing Mistakes
Neglecting to identify new audiences. So often, I hear from clients that they know who they're selling to—after all, they've been selling to the same group for years! But take a step back and you may discover that there is another group just ripe for your products or services...if only you would market to them!

Trying something once, and then throwing in the towel. Clients frequently report that they tried sending out a direct mail piece or placing an ad in the newspaper, but didn't receive a response. "I tried that," they'll tell me, "so I didn't do it again." But what they didn't realize is that advertising seldom has a 1:1 relationship with return on investment. Rather, the axiom "slow and steady wins the race," is key: with repeated exposure to your brand, audiences take notice and internalize the your brand message. So have a plan and stick with it! Brand recognition—and sales—will follow.
Failing to plan. Sound familiar? A sales rep from a publication gives you a call to present an amazing opportunity to place an advertisement in their publication at a ridiculously discounted rate. So you nab it: that $300 is just a fraction of the regular price! But $300 for an ad, $100 for some new business cards, $400 to sponsor an event...the costs add up, and what do you have to show for your investment at the end of the year? A better plan: sit down at the beginning of the year and map your marketing efforts against your budget. Include advertising, direct promotions, sales promotions, and PR in your strategy. You'll find that you'll get more for your dollar when you plan ahead.
